Join us to listen or to sing!
Writtle Singers is a highly respected mixed-voice choir dedicated to performing music to the highest standard and enjoying ourselves doing it – that way, we know our audience will enjoy themselves too.
Although Writtle is our home, we come from as far as Braintree, Dunmow, Harlow, Walthamstow and beyond to make music (and eat home-made cakes) every Monday evening.
Our repertoire is varied – in our repertoire list for recent seasons you’ll find standard repertoire like Stanford’s Three Motets and Duruflé’s Requiem alongside the new and unusual – Gabriel Jackson’s Field of Stars. Janet Wheeler’s Time becomes a song and an array of pieces by Pärt, Whitacre and McDowall and MacMillan. We are never afraid to mix the old with the new in the same concert.
With fewer than 30 singers, every voice makes a difference. Development of good singing technique is encouraged in our warm-ups, led by our experienced and talented musical director Christine Gwynn, and by workshops with Ghislaine Morgan, an internationally renowned vocal coach. Unsurprisingly, then, our soloists are usually drawn from the choir.
We usually perform in All Saints’ Church, Writtle – but local performances have also taken place at Chelmsford Cathedral, Ingatestone Hall, Stondon Massey, Copped Hall and even in a snowy wood at Christmas. Not content with that, we take our music further afield and have performed in Zurich, Cambridge, Bolton Abbey, York Minster, Prague and Antwerp. We have also recorded three CDs, which encompass the breadth of our repertoire.
We hold a very popular quiz night every year, have a swift pint after rehearsals, a social event every summer, so with all this going on, and some great music too, why wouldn’t you want to be a Writtle Singer?
Writtle Singers meet on Mondays from 7.45-9.45pm in All Saints’ Church, Writtle, CM1 3EN (Map) to prepare for concerts and to enjoy making music together. Members are generally experienced choral singers; confident musicianship, good tone and tuning are important attributes along with a willingness to come to rehearsals regularly and well-prepared! We are always pleased to hear from prospective members who are invited take part in rehearsals before being offered an informal audition.
